Domain übertragen 2026

Transferring a domain from one registrar to another can seem daunting, but the process is straightforward when you know the steps. Common reasons to transfer: lower renewal prices at the destination registrar, better management tools, bundling domain and hosting, or simply dissatisfaction with your current provider. This guide walks through every step to ensure a smooth transfer with zero downtime.

  1. 1

    Step 1: Check transfer eligibility

Domains must be at least 60 days old and cannot have been transferred in the last 60 days (ICANN's Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy). Your domain must also not be in Redemption Grace Period or expired status. Log in to your current registrar and check the domain status.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Unlock your domain

Most registrars apply a "transfer lock" to prevent unauthorised transfers. In your registrar's domain management panel, find the "Transfer Lock" or "Registrar Lock" setting and disable it. This is usually found under Domain Settings or Security Settings.

  3. 3

Step 3: Disable WHOIS privacy temporarily

Some registrars require WHOIS privacy to be disabled during transfer so the receiving registrar can send the authorisation email to the registrant address. Check your destination registrar's requirements. many modern registrars handle this automatically without disabling privacy.

  4. 4

Step 4: Request the EPP/Auth code

Also called the "transfer authorisation code", "EPP code", or "Auth-Info code", this is a password that authorises the transfer. Find this in your current registrar's dashboard under Transfer or Security settings. It is usually sent to your account email address. Copy it carefully. It's case-sensitive.

  5. 5

Step 5: Initiate the transfer at the new registrar

Log in to (or create an account at) your chosen destination registrar. Find the "Transfer Domain" option, enter your domain name, and paste the EPP code when prompted. Review the transfer cost. ICANN requires a 1-year registration extension to be included, so you typically get a year of registration added at transfer.

  6. 6

    Step 6: Approve the transfer

The transfer process sends an approval email to the WHOIS registrant email address. Click the approval link to expedite the transfer. Without explicit approval, transfers complete automatically after 5 calendar days under ICANN policy. Keep an eye on your email and spam folder.

  7. 7

Step 7: Verify DNS settings after transfer

After the transfer completes (usually 2–7 days, or faster with approval), verify your domain's nameservers are correctly set at the new registrar. Your website and email should continue working without interruption if nameservers were preserved. If not, re-enter your hosting nameservers in the new registrar's DNS settings.

Namecheap Best Value
Portfolios and Stellar/EasyWP have lived here for years: renewals stay readable, WHOIS privacy is included, and the combo still undercuts most 'domain + host' bundles we price out.

Hostinger Top Pick
Hostinger has survived multiple yearly cycles on our bench: LiteSpeed, hPanel, and sub-$3 intro pricing still deliver the best overall value for most sites we migrate.

Häufig Gestellte Fragen

Will my website go down during a domain transfer?+
Not if your nameservers are preserved. The transfer moves the domain registration between registrars but does not change where the domain points. Your website stays live throughout. Only if nameservers are reset will you experience any downtime.
How long does a domain transfer take?+
With explicit email approval from the registrant, transfers complete in 1–3 days. Without approval, ICANN policy allows up to 5 calendar days. In practice, most transfers complete within 24–48 hours.
Does a domain transfer cost money?+
The transfer itself is free, but ICANN requires a 1-year registration extension to be included. So you pay for one additional year of registration at the destination registrar's renewal price. This effectively makes transfers free. you're just prepaying a year of renewal.
Can I transfer a domain with an active website?+
Yes. There is no need to take your website offline. The domain transfer is a registrar-to-registrar process that does not affect your web hosting or DNS settings unless you explicitly change them.
